The MSSA is working to provide a unified voice to preserve and protect the rights, traditions and the future of recreational fishing. NO UNITY – NO VOICE – NO FISH! ATTENTION: Our April 19th meeting WILL NOT be held at the American Legion. We will this month have our meeting at Composite Yacht. Martin Hardy of Composite Yacht has informed me that he and his staff are putting together a special presentation for our fishing club. You’re welcome to visit their business starting at 5:30 where all sorts of sodas and beer will be provided. You can bring your own if you so wish. Please act responsibly if you drink and drive. Composite has a new line of Triton boats along with Cape Horn and Shamrock boats. They especially want to show off their own Composite 26 Boat.
Composite Yacht is located on the Talbot side of the Choptank River Bridge, turn in as you would go to Gateway Marina (Ferry Boat) but turn right straight into Composite Yacht’s parking lot. Our regular meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. and I’ll keep it short because of the early start. Other than the line of boats mentioned, Composite Yacht has all makes and models sitting around their business that you may be interested in. Don’t miss this special meeting two days before the opening of Rockfish season. ROCKFISH REGULATIONSApril 21st to May 15th – 1 fish per day 28” to 35” or larger than 41” Mainstream Chesapeake Bay from Brewerton Channel to Maryland/Virginia lines plus Tangier and Pocomoke Sounds
May 16th to May 31st – 2 fish per day 18” to 28” or 1 fish 18” to 28” and 1 larger than 28”. Same areas as above but areas of the Chester, Choptank and Patuxent Rivers are open. See map on DNR website which you can go to from our website (mssadorchester.com)
June 1st to December 15th – same size limit as May 16th however all of the Chesapeake Bay and tributaries are open.
Don’t forget to fill our your Striped Bass and Founder surveys. MSSA SPRING TOURNAMENTThe MSSA Spring Tournament is scheduled for May 4-5-6. Don’t forget that fish in this year’s tournament will be weighed, however, because of Rockfish regulations, the fish will also have to be measured because of the slot limit rules. The winners will win by weight as who has the heaviest fish. A lot of money can be won in this tournament and it’s the backbone of the MSSA’s financial support. If you can enter and support this event, please do so. Don’t forget to check the dates for the different captains’ meetings around the state. Boater’s World gives away a lot of merchandise at these captains’ meetings. GETTING YOUR BOAT READYBe sure when you are putting your boat back together for this year’s activities that you check all items to see if they are up to date and will pass inspection. Boat stickers, life preservers, fire extinguishers, flares, throw cushions or rings all must be up to date and pass safety inspections. Be sure you’re ready and enjoy your boat. SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATIONIf you have children or grandchildren that are planning to attend college and majoring in environmental or biological courses, the MSSA is sponsoring scholarships to help with the finances of those courses. The deadline for applying is April 30th. Contact the MSSA office and they will help with the applications. REEFBALL PROJECTThe molds are in place at Barnett Concrete and we will start producing reefballs again this year. If you want to get involved, contact me (Clint). We are still looking at putting our reefballs on reef sites around the bay and Choptank River. DORCHESTER COUNTY MSSA EVENTSWe have our yearlong Club fishing tournament ongoing. You must register your fish at the Recreation Center on Poplar Street.
At our May meeting, we will be giving away $100.00 to a member who signs his tickets when attending our monthly meetings. In May, we will be drawing a winner of our Rod and Reel Combo raffle. If you haven’t bought tickets, please so do to help support your Fishing Club functions. All I’m asking is that every member buy $5.00 worth of raffle tickets.
Club fishing trips will be starting very soon. So be at the meetings to sign up for these trips. GUEST SPEAKERMartin Hardy and sons will entertain us at Composite Yacht. They will explain their boat buildings process and show us new boats that are being offered at their business. Refreshments will be offered. Come early. They will start at 5:30 p.m. showing and answering questions about their boat building business.
Don’t miss this meeting. It should be a lot of fun.
See you at the meeting or on the water.
Clint
P.S. THERE WILL BE NO MEETING AT THE AMERICAN LEGION ON APRIL 19TH. THE MEETING WILL BE AT COMPOSITE YACTH ON THE TALBOT COUNTY SIDE OF THE CHOPTANK RIVER BRIDGE. |
