NEXT MEETING – THURSDAY, AUGUST 16, 2007

7:30 p.m. – AMERICAN LEGION POST 91

The MSSA is working to provide a unified voice to preserve and protect the rights, traditions and the future of recreational fishing.

NO UNITY – NO VOICE – NO FISH!

It’s August, it’s hot, it’s humid and fishing is looking pretty good.  Live lining has been great the last four weeks for catching legal Rockfish.  Jigging on breaking fish when you find them has improved.  Most schools have undersized Rockfish but there are a lot of Bluefish in the mix.  Bottom fishing for Spot during the day and fishing for Croakers early morning but mainly late evening has been really good.  The last few trips to catch Spot for live lining, there have been a few small Yellow Fin Trout caught, which may mean we might have a few Trout to jig on this fall.  Some Flounder are being caught. That has shown improvement over the last two years.  So all in all fishing is pretty good.  If you can stand the heat, get a few buddies and catch a few fish. Be at the meeting to find out where all this good fishing is happening.

M.A.R.I.

Maryland Artificial Reef Initiative

The Maryland Artificial Reef Initiative is moving along. The Point No Point site is going to be a mega reef. Material is being put on the Tangier Sound site and this week they start placing material at Cedar Point at the mouth of the Patuxent River. This is a project we must support for it will affect Dorchester County fishing.  Plans are to add onto the Taylor’s Island site, build a mega reef at the Goose’s and start a new reef at the Airplane Wreck in the Choptank River – all surrounding Dorchester County.  Our Chapter will purchase $200 of material at $25 a ton.  We will have a container set up at our meeting for members to donate whatever they can and every $25 will purchase a ton of material.  Our reef ball project will swing into play once material is placed at the Airplane Wreck. Get involved and support this project.

FISHING TOURNAMENT AND CRAB FEAST

Our Chapter’s fishing tournament and crab feast is scheduled for Sunday, October 7th. So start making plans now to participate in these events. Get all the details at our meeting or on our web site.

POPULAR ISLAND TRIP

Bob Geisler, our new trip coordinator, has put together a free trip and tour of Popular Island. We did this trip a few years back and it was very interesting and informative.  If you did or didn’t go last time, you have time to think about it for the trip is scheduled for October 8th.  There are 20 open slots, so the first 20 who sign up will go.  Popular Island rebuilt is the model of what hopefully will happen at James Island and Barren Island.

FISHING TRIPS

Fall of the year is right around the corner so that means Sea Bass and Tog trips are coming up. We, as a fishing club, need to talk about and plan these trips. Be at the meeting and let’s get some trips scheduled.  If you have any ideas about fishing trips, please let us know.

GUEST SPEAKER

We have two speakers this month. First is Charlie Hutchinson.  There has been a lot going on behind the scenes with the  Menhaden problem. Charlie has stayed on top of things by meeting with different groups. Charlie feels it’s time to let our Chapter get updated on what is happening.  If, as a fisherman, you care what is going on in our Bay area, which you should, this is a meeting not to miss.

Our second speaker is Rick Long, the inventor of the “Fishoff Glove.”  Rick is a member of the Southern Maryland Chapter of the MSSA.  Rick will speak about the history of the glove and the benefits and use of it. Rick makes the glove in his own basement at home.  If you have trouble handling fish and getting spiked, then you want to see how this glove works.

See you at the meeting or on the water.

Clint
