DORCHESTER MSSA CHAPTER 11 FISHING CLUB ____________________________________________________________
Next Meeting - Thursday,
October 20th, 2005 ____________________________________________________________ President and Secretary -
Clint Waters Chapter Flea Market - Chuck Prahl The MSSA is working to provide a unified voice to preserve and protect the rights, traditions and the future of recreational fishing. NO UNITY - NO VOICE - NO FISH ! Fall is finally here after a long, hot, dry summer. Fall fishing comes to mind and dreams of fall fishing in the past flashes through our minds. The memories are full of great fall trips and the bounty of large beautiful fish in our coolers. Be glad we have those moments and memories for we may never experience those fishing trips again. With the condition of the Chesapeake Bay worsening every year and lack of quality bait fish disappearing, we are unlikely to see the big fish of the past. I think of the upper Bay area from the Virginia line north and how bad Flounder and Yellow Fin Trout fishing was this year. Could it be that these fish while traveling north from the ocean run into all the bad water and dead zones we had in the Bay this year and just stopped and stayed south? These fish travel in deep water and the dead water was worse in deeper water. Who knows - for when that fishery was as bad this year as I can remember, you look everywhere for the answer. Will the bigger Rockfish make it north this year? That remains to be seen. The Bay and rivers are full of sub-legal Rockfish and it’s a shame to have to handle all those small fish to finally get a legal fish. With all those small fish, one would think next year would be great. However, these fish get bigger and leave the Bay for the ocean to never return particularly in the fall. Would you want to return to a polluted area with no oxygen or food? Enough gloom and doom. Here’s wishing good fishing the rest of this year. FISHING TOURNAMENT AND CRAB FEAST Our Chapter fishing tournament and crab feast was held on Sunday, October 9th. The weather was a little windy and chilly, but was fine for fishing. A lot of sub-legal fish were caught and released by all boats in the tournament. Charles Hutchinson checked in the largest Rockfish and Bluefish. Bob Shenton entered the biggest Trout. Lenny Hyre won with the longest perch. Everyone year this is a fun tournament and every member should fish this event. We had around 70 people enjoy the crabs and food at our crab feast. I want to thank all the families that provided side dishes. They went great with the crabs. Most of all I want to thank Jim Kubista and Norm Bell for putting the feast all together. Jim and Norm want to remind people that next year they need to know who is coming earlier because this year we had almost 30 people sign up after the crabs were ordered. We didn’t run out of crabs, but it was close. CHRISTMAS DINNER Jesse Maffuid has informed me that he has already got a place, date and menu at a great price for our Christmas dinner party. The dinner will be held Saturday, December 10th at 6:00 p.m. at the Nanticoke Inn in Vienna. The dinner will be buffet style at $15.00 per person. The complete menu will be in next month’s newsletter and we will talk about this dinner at this month’s meeting. FISHING TRIPS Bob Watson has done an excellent job this year on scheduling fishing trips and he’s not finished yet. As I write this newsletter and before our meeting on October 20th, we will be fishing on two trips he has lined up. October 12th, we will be Sea Bass fishing out of Ocean City. October 17th, there is Flounder fishing out of Onancoke, Virginia. After our meeting there are trips he had lined up that we will be talking about at the meeting. November 7th-the tour of Poplar Island is scheduled. The tour is from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. For those who signed up for this tour, go across Napp Narrows bridge onto Tilghman Island. Take the first left and board the boat "Terrapin" at the dock. November 16th- we will have a signup sheet at the October 20th meeting for a Bowers Beach, Delaware trip that may involve Sea Bass, Tog and Rockfish. CHAPTER 11 OFFICERS The MSSA Chapter 11 Dorchester County officers will stay the same for 2006. There will be some changes in our committees, but not many. There was a good increase in our 2005 membership and hopefully 2006 will be even better. Support your Chapter. We have a good bunch of people. Get involved! REEF BALLS We now have around 70 reef balls made and will continue until the weather gets cold. I want to thank the loyal people who get together on Wednesday evenings to work on this reef ball project. I also want to get divers on our old reef site to see how that area is doing. This is a worthwhile project. Please support it if you can. GUEST SPEAKER Our speaker this month is a member of this Chapter and the ex-vice president of this Chapter. He is the lead instructor for the emergency response department at Calhoon MEBA Engineering School in Easton, Maryland. MEBA trains merchant seamen as well as U.S. Navy personnel. He will speak on the basics of first aid, CPR and communications while recreating on the Chesapeake Bay. He will offer suggestions for equipment as well as information on how to contact emergency agencies should they be needed. He also will touch on how to prevent accidents and how to prepare your vessels with very little out-of-pocket expense. He is a good friend and member of the MSSA. Pete Vigneri will be our speaker. As we get older and our fishing partners are heading in that direction, we all need an education in first aid and communications to get help in an emergency. Don’t miss this important meeting. See you at the meeting or on the water. Clint P.S. Also, at this month’s meeting, along with the 50/50 drawing, we will give away a VHF Marine Radio. The radio was donated by Mid-Shore Electronics. This radio was won by Ed Kerbaugh at the August meeting and he gave it back to the Club. You have to attend the meeting to win this radio for your boat
