NEXT MEETING – THURSDAY, JULY 20, 2006

7:30 p.m. – AMERICAN LEGION POST 91

The MSSA is working to provide a unified voice to preserve and protect the rights, traditions and the future of recreational fishing.

NO UNITY – NO VOICE – NO FISH!

My computer has gone on a deep six, kaput, deader than a door nail.  So this will be my first newsletter without the help of my old faithful computer. The newsletter will have to be typed, pasted and put together the old-fashioned way.  What did we do or how did we get anything done before the computer?  How did we survive before air conditioning?  How did we catch fish before depth finders, GPSs, chart plotters and all the other electronic gadgets we have now a days?  I think back to the days before I could afford a boat and how well I used to catch fish from the river banks, jetties, piers and anyplace that I could wet a hook.  Things will get done by using your good common sense and American ingenuity.

The condition of the Chesapeake Bay and our rivers presents a very bleak picture and we may have to use our ingenuity to catch fish.  Most people I talk to locally are doing poorly fishing.  Some fishermen are doing so-so and picking up some good fish here and there.  There seems to be no one location that is holding fish over a long period.  The best advice I can give is keep checking out your old good locations and try different things that you haven’t tried for years.  The best thing to do is attend our monthly meetings to find out where, how and who is catching fish.

FISHING TRIPS

Our fishing club has gone on quite a few trips already this year.  Some very successful and some so-so, but that is fishing.  Since our June 15th meeting, we have had a June 20th fishing trip out of Bowers Beach, Delaware for Flounder.  June 23-24-25th was the MSSA Tunament out of Ocean City, Wachapreague and Chincoteague.  Bob Watson, Ken Barwick, Bob Granados, Joe Truitt, Warren Kenny and myself (Clint) fished on Doug Whittington’s boat “KIWI” all three days of the tournament. The weather was wonderful, didn’t win any money, but did bring home some Dolphin and Tuna to enjoy and share wth our fishing friends.  There is a July 18th fishing trip out of Cape Charles, Virginia that will be reported on at our July 20th meeting.  We have a rescheduled trip out of Onancoke, Virginia on July 26th.  There are a lot of trips scheduled the rest of the year so be at the meetings or check the web site (MSSADORCHESTER.COM) to get involved and go on some of these trips.

YEARLONG FISHING TOURNAMENT

Our MSSA chapter still has its year-long tournament ongoing.  It runs until our November meeting.  Here are the updated standings:

Rockfish – Bob Shenton – 40”                                                    Perch – Chuck Prahl – 13 5/8”

Bluefish – Bob Watson – 27 ¾”                                              Crappie – Mike German – 11 3/8”

Flounder – Ken Barwick – 20”                                                    Seabass – Bob Watson – 21 ½”

There are many more species to be entered and all the ones already listed can be beat. So get out there and enter fish in our tournament, plus you might catch “Diamond Jim” while you’re fishing.

GUEST SPEAKER

Our speaker this month is Captain Chris Dollar of Osprey Expeditions. Chris just became an editor for “Fisherman Magazine.”  He will talk on fly and light-tackle fishing on near shore waters, marshes and seldom fished backwaters of Delmarva for Stripers, Speckled Trout, Redfish and Bluefish.  This should be a very informative presentation that you should not miss.

See you at the meeting or on the water.

Clint
