NEXT MEETING – THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2006

7:30 p.m. – AMERICAN LEGION POST 91

The MSSA is working to provide a unified voice to preserve and protect the rights, traditions and the future of recreational fishing.

NO UNITY – NO VOICE – NO FISH!

The newsletter usually starts with a fishing report and will this month.  However, it will be a short report because of all the activities that are taking place between now and our meeting in October.  Fish are starting to school up real good and Rockfish and Bluefish are everywhere.  Also, in the mid and lower Bay there are reports of Trout being caught under these breaking fish.  Just look for feeding gulls and work that area, but don’t run your boat through the birds.  If you can’t find any gulls working, check out areas that have drop offs and keep a sharp eye on your fish finder.  Looks like we might have good fall fishery.

OCTOBER 8TH DOREHCESTER COUNTY FISHING TOURNAMENT

BE at our September 21st meeting to sign up and have the rules read.  To enter will be $10.00 per person and all money goes back to the winners who catch the larges Rockfish, Bluefish, Trout and White Perch.  The following are the rules for the tournament.

  1. Fishing will start at 5:00 a.m. and final check in registration by 4:00 p.m. on October 8th at the American Legion.
  2. No check in registration of fish before 3:00 p.m.

CRAB FEAST

Our crab feast will be held the same day, October 8th, at the American Legion Post 91.  The crab feast will start at 4:00 p.m., right after our fishing tournament.  A cover charge of $5.00 per member and $15.00 per non-member guest will be charged for this event.  Try to sign up at our September 21st meeting so Jim Kubista (410-228-4690) and Norm Bell (410-228-0913) can get a head count to make sure enough crabs are ordered.  If you can’t make the meeting, contact Jim or Norm.  Try to bring a covered dish if you can so we will be able to serve something besides crabs, corn, beer and sodas which also will be provided.  People have been great in supplying covered dishes in the past!  Here again, try to sign up for the tournament and crab fest at our September 21st meeting.

OCTOBER 14TH OPEN HOUSE AT HORN POINT

Ann Athessen, our speaker last month from Horn Point Lab, who gave a great presentation on “Atlantic Sturgeon” informed me that Horn Point Lab will have an open house on October 14th at this facility in Cambridge on the Choptank River.  If you have or haven’t been to Horn Point Lab, this is a tour you shouldn’t miss. They do great things in trying to get Bay resources restored.  Put this date on your calendar and don’t miss this event.

MSSA ELECTIONS

Ballots will be mailed by September 19th.  When you receive it, I urge you to vote. See attached letter for my choice of candidates.  President-Keith McGuire, Vice President-Lee Stagle, Secretary-Clint Waters, Treasurer-Jeff Anna.  Once you vote, mail the completed ballot to MSSA headquarters or bring it to the next Chapter meeting.  All ballots must be received at the MSSA office by October 31st. Ballots will be counted on November 2nd.  If you want to run for an office in our local Chapter, summit your name at our September 21st meeting. Vote and get involved.

GUEST SPEAKER

Our speaker this month is Dick Tettelbaum  Dick has been appointed as the Choptank River Keeper. There are 140 such river keepers in the world and he is the 2nd appointed on the Eastern Shore. Dick has just started to put this program together and will tell us what it’s all about.  Our rivers and Bay are getting in worse condition every year. This is another step in trying to help our rivers.

See you at the meeting or on the water.

Clint
