The MSSA is working to provide a unified voice to preserve and protect the rights, traditions and the future of recreational fishing. NO UNITY – NO VOICE – NO FISH! Will it ever warm up so we can wet a fishing hook? February was bitter cold and March is starting out that way. Some of our members are catching Crappie and Bluegill. Some Perch are being caught. Chuck Prahl assures me that March 10th, the Perch will start biting a hook. I hope he is right. A couple of our members tell me that the upper Choptank River above Greensboro is hot right now with Bass and Perch. So hang in there. Fishing should start very soon.
FOUNDER REGULATIONSAs I write this newsletter, here are the Founder Regulations. However, they might change. So stay on top of these regs before you start fishing. Maryland.............................. 15”......................................................................... two per person on the coast......................... 15½ “..................................................................... four per person Delaware............................... 17”......................................................................... four per person Virginia................................. 18½”...................................................................... five per person As I write this report, the Rockfish regulations have not been set.
FISHING TRIPSSea Bass and Tog trips are on standby, waiting for warm weather. Bob Watson is making contact with different boat captains to start setting fishing trips and dates. You must attend our monthly meetings to sign up for these fishing trips. We had a good assortment of successful fishing trips last year and I’m looking forward to the fishing trips this year!
FLEA MARKETThis year’s Flea Market was successful, but not quite the income we had planned for. The competition from the Pasadena and Ocean City shows hurt us a little. We did sign up 52 members and 16 of those were new members. That was great! We signed up more members in one day than Pasadena did in two days and only one short of members who signed up at the three day Ocean City show. Our Club table at our Flea Market that our members donated items to did better than any year we’ve had our Flea Market. I want to thank everyone who donated items and volunteered at different positions to make this event as successful as it was. Mainly Chuck Prahl who is our main volunteer. We now need to concentrate on our Rod and Reef Raffle. A lot of members have turned in their tickets and money, but there are a lot who haven’t. All I’m asking is for each member to purchase $5.00 worth of chances to help cover the difference in the profit we made at the Flea Market to balance out our budget for 2007. All the money taken in goes into your Chapter’s events.
CHAPTER EVENTS 1. $100.00 awarded at our May and November meetings for appreciation to the members who attend our monthly meetings. This year there will be two winners at each meeting.
2. Our yearlong fishing contest where $300.00 is awarded to the fisherman who catches the largest fish in different categories.
3. Fishing trips all year long where the Club picks up the gas travel money.
4. The fishing tournament and crab feast that is held in October.
5. Our Christmas party in December.
MSSADORCHESTER.COM Our website is ever growing. Kurt Brandt, our webmaster, is doing a fantastic job with this program. If you have anything to sell or any announcement, they can be listed free to our members on this website. Almost all the information you need to become a better fisherman is on this site. If you are not getting your newsletter by email and would like to, please send your email address to webmaster@mssadorchester.com or contact Kurt or me (Clint). This is your website. Use it.
GUEST SPEAKEROur speaker this month is Keith McGuire. Keith is a member of the Southern Maryland Chapter, member at large for the MSSA and a very good Flounder fisherman. Keith has volunteered to speak to us about his abilities and secrets in Flounder fishing. He will show us how to troll for Flounder also. This is a type of fishing that very few are skilled at. If you’re like this old dog, I’m willing to learn new tricks. If you’re interested in Flounder fishing, don’t miss this meeting.
See you at the meeting or on the water.
