The MSSA is working to provide a unified voice to preserve and protect the rights, traditions and the future of recreational fishing.
NO UNITY – NO VOICE – NO FISH!
Sunday, October 7th is one of the biggest days for the Dorchester County fishing club. That is the day of our fishing tournament and crab feast. What a beautiful day it was! The weather was a little hot for it set record temperatures the day before and the day of our tournament. However, there was no wind. We had 48 people fish the tournament and all money taken in went back to the winners. The day of the tournament was the weekend and Columbus Day was Monday, so there were a lot of boats around messing up good fishing. We do most of our fishing during the week and what a difference that makes in good fishing. I really enjoy this tournament every year. I only wish more of our members would participate. You have to be a member of the MSSA to fish this tournament and everyone in the boat has to be an MSSA member. We picked up four new members this year. The fishing hours were from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. You had to have your fish checked in by 4 p.m. The weight station opened at 3 p.m. and Chuck Prahl was our weigh master. Chuck measured all the fish from closed mouth to V in the tail. The four fish to win on were: Rockfish, Bluefish, Trout and Perch. The winners were:
Mike German Bluefish 18” Clint Waters Trout 17” Gary Peek Rockfish 19 5/8” Gary Peek Perch 10.5”
Congratulations to the winners! The crab feast started at 4 p.m. right after the fishing tournament. We had 90 members and guests enjoy the feast. I want to thank Jim Kubista and Norm Bell for putting this crab feast together. The crabs were huge! The first pile of crabs they put in front of me looked like lobsters they were so big and full of crab meat. Again this year, the families that brought in side dishes outdid themselves for they were great. We had great crabs, great corn, great side dishes and plenty of beer and sodas for only $5.00 a person. Now you can’t beat that! The winners of the 50/50 drawing at our Crab Feast were Diann Hanna, Clint Waters and Steve Spellman. We decided to have three winners this year instead of one. You have to spread the wealth. If you’re not participating in these events and other events our fishing club offers, you’re missing out on some great fellowship and fun. Try to be a good member and enjoy what we have to offer such as improving your fishing skills, fishing trips, fishing tournaments and crab feasts. Come to our meetings the 3rd Thursday of each month.
October 3rd and 8th, Bob Geisler, our fishing trip coordinator, set up trips to see Popular Island. This island is being rebuilt from dredge material from the Bay area. We did these trips a couple of years back and it is amazing how much progress is being made to restore this island. It’s good to use our tax dollars to do some good for a change. This trip does not cost anything and you should visit this site if you can. After Popular Island, they are to restore James Island and Barren Island. Here again, be at our meetings, the 3rd Thursday of each month to participate in this event.
M.A.R.I.
The Maryland Artificial Reef Initiative is moving right along, still putting the material from the Woodrow Wilson Bridge on reef sites all around the Chesapeake Bay and Tangier Sound. Point No Point is about 90% complete. The two sites in Tangier Sound will be completed soon. The site at Cedar Point, at the mouth of the Patuxent River, is nearly complete. The next large site is the Gooses area. After that comes Taylor’s Island and the Airplane Wreck area. This is a great program that needs all our support. I’ll report more on M.A.R.I. at our meeting.
GUEST SPEAKER
Our speaker this month is Jim Price. The last time Jim spoke he showed us a lot of numbers and charts which were confusing. This time will be different. Jim will talk in fisherman’s lingo that we can all understand. He will talk about Menhaden and the effect they have on Rockfish and the Chesapeake Bay area. This is a very important subject because our area and our chapter of the MSSA have been in the forefront of this problem. Please don’t miss this presentation for it is too important for our fishery and the Bay area.
See you at the meeting or on the water.
