The MSSA is working to provide a unified voice to preserve and protect the rights, traditions and the future of recreational fishing.
NO UNITY – NO VOICE – NO FISH!
By the time we have our meeting on the 16th, the spring rockfish season will open three days later on the 19th. I hope everyone has their boats and gear ready for there are some very large fish in the Chesapeake Bay. A few Chapter members and myself have had some good trips White Perch fishing, but I haven’t seen a Yellow Perch caught. I love eating freshly caught White Perch.
Anyway, get your gear ready and enjoy some great fishing on the Chesapeake Bay. If you are into catch and release, know how to handle these large fish. Try not to handle these large fish vertically any more than you can for it does damage the internal organs of the fish. Good luck! Be safe and courteous and know the regulations.
ROCK FISH REGULATIONS
April 19, 2008 thru May 13, 2008 – one fish per person per day – 28 inches and bigger. Restricted to the mainstream Chesapeake Bay from Brewerton Channel to Maryland/Virginia Line, Tangier and Pocomoke Sounds – no tributaries
May 14 and 15 – catch and release only
May 16 thru 31 – restricted to Chesapeake Bay plus areas of the Chester, Choptank and Patuxent Rivers
May 16 thru December 15, 2008 – two fish per person per day – two at 18 to 28 inches, or one – 18 to 28 inches and one larger than 28 inches
June 1 thru December 15, 2008 – all of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries are open to fishing
MSSA SPRING TOURNAMENT
This tournament will be held May 2-3-4th. If you have not entered, get a crew together and do so. This event supports all the MSSA activities and the biggest fund raiser. There is big money to win and a lot of fun. Sign up on the MSSA web site or at one of the Boater’s World captains’ meetings. Boater’s World, our biggest sponsor, gives away some great prizes at these captains’ meetings. I’ll have plenty of tournament books at our meeting and would be lade to help you.
ROD AND REEL RAFFLE
Remember that the proceeds from this raffle go to the Maryland Artificial Reef Initiative (MARI). Not only can you win a great rod and reel combo of your choice, but you are supporting a good cause for Maryland fishermen. I want to thank all the members who have sent in their checks and money already. If you haven’t, and you know who you are, please send a check for $5.00 or more made out to MSSA Dorchester and I will see that chances are written in your name. Remember this raffle runs until our June 18th meeting.
Bob Geisler and myself went out of Chesapeake Beach, Friday, March 28th to dedicate the new Dominion Reef at the Gooses. This is going to be a mega reef over 300 acres. So try to support MARI if you can. Remember, every $25.00 buys a ton of material.
CLUB FISHING TRIPS AND TOURNAMENTS
Our Club’s fishing trips should go into full swing starting in May and the rest of the year. So be at the meetings to take full advantage of these trips. First come, first served.
We also need to start getting our summer fishing tournament planned along with our fall tournament and crab feast. I’m open for all ideas and suggestions.
BOAT INSPECTIONS
We now have a member who is an inspector for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. If enough members are interested in getting their boats inspected, we can have an inspection day set up for the inspections. He came to my house and did an inspection on my boat. I passed okay but I also picked up a few pointers that all boat operators should know. When that sticker is put on your boat, most likely the DNR and Coast Guard will leave you alone when you are out on the water. If you want your boat inspected, be at the April 16th meeting and if there is enough interest we can get a day and place set up.
GUEST SPEAKER
If you are into trolling or want to learn about trolling, this is the meeting you don’t want to miss. Captain John Sharp will be our speaker. I was at a fishing seminar and was really impressed with John’s talk on trolling. His approach from getting set up to finishing up was really informative and professional. He went into the teaching of trolling the way you can understand and remember. John was very professional in diagramming and answering questions. Don’t miss this meeting. You may never get a chance again to understand and learn about trolling.
See you at the meeting or on the water.
Clint
