The MSSA is working to provide a unified voice to preserve and protect the rights, traditions and the future of recreational fishing.
NO UNITY – NO VOICE – NO FISH!
This spring’s Rockfish Trophy Season so far is not as good as last years. I feel the spawn was earlier and most of the large fish got past us mainly in the mid and upper Bay. Not that a lot of large fish were caught. It just seemed to take more hours on the water to get your fish. Fishing seemed better in the southern part of the Bay. They are catching good-sized Hardhead in the Bay and rivers. That means Spot can’t be far behind and that means live-lining will start. I only hope this year live-lining is as good as last years. Chuck Prahl has been picking up a few Speckled Trout in the Honga River. It’s getting that time of year to enjoy fishing. Be at the meeting to find out where and how to fish.
MSSA SPRING TOURNAMENT
For once the weather half-way cooperated. Friday, May 2nd, and Sunday, May 4th, the morning was nasty, but calmed down in the afternoon. Saturday, May 3rd, was a good day – all day. The fish were big again this year; but not as big as last year. Don Yirka checked in the largest Rockfish weighing 43.35 pounds. Don won $16,070 for he was in only two small TWTs. Second place winner was Kayvan Bahrami with a 42.10 pound Rockfish and he was in all the TWTs. Kayvan won a whopping $89,288. It pays to get into the TWTs. Third place winner was Richard Garrison with a 39.25 pound Rockfish. Our own member, Robert “Swamprat” Shenton, came in 9th place with a 36.00 pound Rockfish. Congratulations Bob! DORCHESTER COUNTY SUMMER TOURNAMENT
This tournament will be held June 28th. There are no entry fees and the angler who brings in the biggest fish of any species wins $20.00. There could be many winners. You can fish all of the Maryland part of the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers. You can check in your fish anytime after 11:00 a.m. at Great Marsh Park. Jesse Maffuid and Chuck Prahl will be frying Catfish and French fries from 11:00 to 12:00 noon. You can clean and cook your own fish if you want to. Bring your own refreshments. This should be a fun day to get our members together for a day of fishing. Come to the meeting to get entered and understand the rules.
YEARLONG TOURNAMENT
This tournament is ongoing until our meeting in November. The angler with the largest or longest fish of any species will win ten (10) extra tickers in our membership drawing at our November meeting. The tournament board will be at our meetings, so you will know what size fish you need to catch or what species you need to catch. Remember, we have a membership drawing at our June meeting for $100.00. To get a ticket to enter, all you have to do is come to a meeting.
BOAT INSPECTIONS – MAY 17TH
I hope to have this newsletter in the mail early enough, so everyone knows about the USCG Auxiliary free boat inspection of your craft. The free inspection will be at Franklin Street boat ramp starting at 8:30 a.m. in Cambridge in back of the hospital. Come by land or water. Your boat can be inspected either way. For more information go to our website, WWW.HTTP://MSSADORCHESTER.COM Call either Barry Vickers (410-749-7059) or Clint Waters (443-225-5545) if you want your boat inspected so we can get a boat count.
MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS
It seems a lot of our members, after renewing their membership, it takes a long time to get their new membership cards. I have been in contact with the MSSA office and our new assistant executive director, Dave Smith, has promised me the problem will be solved. One way to help this problem is for our members not to wait until the due date to renew but renew a month before your expiration date. I promise this problem will be resolved.
GUEST SPEAKER
Our speaker for May 21st is Mark Robbins. Mark’s family years back built the Robbins’ boats in Dorchester County. Mark is a very good fisherman, who fishes the reefs and wrecks off Ocean City in his own boat. That will be the subject. Learn how to fish these reefs and wrecks in your own boat. Mark has been doing this type of fishing for a lot of years and is very good at this craft. Seabass are his specialty.
So if you want to do this type of fishing be at our meeting. Don’t miss this meeting!
Clint
